Five years ago we ran into a friend we hadn’t seen in months. He looked fantastic and had dropped 25 lbs! He’d started getting 8 hours of sleep per night. Didn’t alter his diet or exercise, just went to bed at a decent hour and slept. Our pineal gland (part of the endocrine system) produces the hormone melatonin each night signaling our body it’s time for that healing, detoxing, restorative gift called “sleep”. If enveloped in synthetic “fragrance”-coated sheets huffing endocrine-disrupting, hormone-blocking phtalates all night, the body can’t do what it’s designed so beautifully to do. Hence, gobs of ads with drug-dealin’ neon butterflies flitting around knocking people unconscious. More chemicals. Blech. So our first bit of advice to anyone with difficulty sleeping is throw out that toxic fabric softener, dryer sheet, and detergent. Then, we can discuss caffeine restriction, exercise, supplemental melatonin and 5 HTP. Yep, sleep is something we cherish and do well in this house.
